What is grounding and why is it important?
Grounding is a word that gets used a lot but what is it?
It can simply be explained as balancing out the physical and spiritual energy in your body by connecting oneself with the earth.
The more grounded you are then also the more energy that can flow through you in the present moment so it also goes hand in hand with personal growth as you travel through life.
When grounded, whatever is going on around you tends to have less of a jarring effect on how you are experiencing or observing it.
This is why I feel it is really an essential skill to be aware of and to implement each day, and one that is already utilized by incredible numbers of people daily.
When you are grounded it is likely you will feel more present, centred and solid. The world appears to slow down and it\'s easier to take a breath and create space for yourself.
Think of the Oak tree that grows for years grounded into the earth and seemingly unfazed by the world around it.
Growing up in England we had a number of old Oak trees on the land I lived on. There is one particular tree that comes to mind that stood proudly in the fields. Come rain, wind or shine there it stood year after year slowly growing and barely moved by the elements.
The nice thing with being human is that if we get uprooted or ungrounded, we can re-plant ourselves right away using conscious thought and choice.
If you are ungrounded how might that be experienced?
When we are ungrounded it can feel like:
• Feeling spacey
• Feeling like we are not being fully in the body or jumping out of the body
• Feeling scattered
• Feeling anxious
• Overly affected by other peoples emotions or energy
• Things can feel like they are more challenging than usual
• Wanting to be doing things all the time as apposed to just being
These are just a few ways that it can feel when we are ungrounded. It can be felt mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
It can have real world influence on health and wellbeing. Feeling drained, poor sleep, aches and pains in the body can be influenced by how grounded we are.
The good news is that everyone gets ungrounded at times so you are in good company with the rest of the inhabitants of earth.
Different people experience different levels and some people are more susceptible than others. Some people are quite grounded naturally and then others really struggle to stay in their body. Some people spend more time ungrounded than they do being grounded. The way the western world has been manufactured for mental consumption has lead more and more people to be out of the moment and out of their body.
Sensitive and Empaths
Those of us that are more on the sensitive and empathic side of things may have to put in more effort. To spend more time in a more grounded state which is why it is recommended as a daily practice for everyone.
Why would we want to be more grounded? Well our health has got be very close to the top if not number one and then another reason is that it can really contribute to reducing our suffering and stress.
It can contribute to enjoying life more and that is something that most people I speak with, wish to achieve.
Grounding brings you into the moment, it allows you to be surrounded by the busyness of the world while just being. Allowing the world to flow around you so that you can thrive instead of just survive.
Why is Grounding Important?
The last element in the title to this blog post is, why is grounding important? Well the answer to this is actually subjective because it is your choice. It is always your choice to choose if something is important. If you are looking for ways to improve your life experience and probably your health also then I would say yes it is important. If you are fine with rushing around through life in a whirlwind and not being in the present moment. Then maybe taking the time to practice isn’t for you just now.
Neither of these statements are broad enough to encompass all perspectives and neither choice is right or wrong. They are just that, a choice.
Based on personal experience and by the feedback from countless clients I can tell you from my own observation and perspective that it really is important. I value improving life and its experience. I value being my best. I value being there for my family. I value helping my clients. I value my health. I value growing and expanding my mind, body and spirit.
If some of these things are also within your own values, then grounding will likely be important to you too. It can take a little education and practice to integrate it into your life. That is part of the fun and the gains that it returns to you as an individual make it all worth it.
